Job Overview
A leading steel manufacturing and distribution company is seeking an experienced Production Supervisor to join their operations team in Gqeberha. The role is suited to a hands-on manufacturing professional with strong leadership ability and a solid background in heavy industry production environments.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising production activities, improving operational efficiency, maintaining strict quality standards, and ensuring full compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Key Purpose of the Role
The primary purpose of this role is to ensure efficient and safe production operations by leading teams, managing workflow, and optimising plant performance. You will be responsible for meeting production targets while ensuring that quality, safety, and efficiency standards are consistently maintained.
You will also support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing downtime, improving output, and enhancing overall operational performance.
Core Responsibilities
The Production Supervisor will be responsible for the following:
Production Management
- Supervise daily production operations to ensure output targets are achieved
- Coordinate production schedules and allocate resources effectively
- Monitor production processes to ensure efficiency and consistency
- Analyse production performance and adjust workflows where necessary
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and supervise production staff
- Ensure effective shift management and workforce planning
- Drive performance improvement through coaching and support
- Foster a disciplined and safety-conscious working environment
Quality Control
- Ensure all products meet required quality standards
- Monitor production output to reduce defects and rework
- Implement and enforce quality control procedures
- Work closely with quality assurance teams to maintain compliance
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities for process optimisation and cost reduction
- Implement lean manufacturing and efficiency improvement initiatives
- Support operational excellence and productivity enhancement programs
Maintenance & Engineering Coordination
- Collaborate with engineering and maintenance teams to reduce downtime
- Support fault identification and resolution during production interruptions
- Ensure equipment is used efficiently and maintained properly
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Enforce strict adherence to health and safety regulations (OHS standards)
- Ensure safe working practices across all production activities
- Conduct safety checks and ensure compliance with company policies
- Promote a strong safety culture within the production team
Data & Systems Management
- Analyse production data to improve decision-making and performance
- Utilise systems such as SAP and production monitoring tools
- Maintain accurate production reports and documentation
- Support data-driven planning and operational adjustments
Minimum Requirements
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Proven experience as a Production Supervisor or similar role
- Experience in steel manufacturing, heavy industry, or large-scale production environments
- Strong leadership and team management experience
- Solid understanding of production processes and quality control systems
- Experience working with SAP systems (advantageous)
- Familiarity with industrial systems such as SCADA and DCS (advantageous)
- Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety standards (OHS)
- Relevant qualification in engineering, production management, or safety (advantageous)
- Willingness to work in a demanding, fast-paced industrial environment
