Job Overview

The African Leadership Academy (ALA), a leading non-profit organisation focused on developing future leaders across Africa, is seeking Engineering Mentors for its Engineering Leadership Program (ELP). This initiative is sponsored by Chevron Corporation and is designed for highly motivated high school learners aged 15 to 18 who are interested in pursuing careers in STEM fields, including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The program provides an immersive, hands-on learning experience where participants work in teams to solve real-world engineering challenges. Mentors play a central role in guiding, coaching, and supporting learners throughout the program, helping them translate ideas into practical engineering solutions.


About the Program

The Engineering Leadership Program is an intensive short course that introduces students to core engineering principles and teamwork-based problem solving. Participants are exposed to practical engineering design thinking, from ideation to prototype development and final presentation.

Under the guidance of experienced STEM educators, leadership facilitators, and industry professionals, students develop both technical and leadership skills. The program focuses strongly on collaboration, innovation, and real-world application of engineering concepts.

Mentors are key contributors to the success of this program, ensuring that participants remain engaged, supported, and challenged throughout the learning journey.


Key Responsibilities

As an Engineering Mentor, your role will include the following duties:

  • Provide academic and personal support to a group of up to 8 participants throughout the program duration
  • Welcome and orient participants upon arrival at the African Leadership Academy campus
  • Guide learners through engineering design challenges, including brainstorming, concept development, iteration, and final presentations
  • Facilitate selected program sessions as assigned by the program coordinators
  • Support evening and extracurricular activities designed to build teamwork, leadership, and community engagement
  • Assist with residential responsibilities, including evening check-ins and participant supervision before lights out
  • Participate in excursions and external learning activities
  • Contribute to maintaining a structured, safe, and supportive learning environment
  • Carry out additional duties as required to ensure smooth program delivery

Program Schedule and Location

  • Duration: Monday, 22 June – Saturday, 11 July 2026
  • Training Period: 22 June – 26 June 2026
  • Program Delivery: 28 June – 11 July 2026
  • Location: African Leadership Academy Campus, Johannesburg, South Africa

This is a fully residential program. Mentors are required to stay on campus for the entire duration.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The role is suitable for individuals who are passionate about education, engineering, and youth development.

Minimum requirements include:

  • Currently pursuing or holding a BSc or MSc degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated leadership potential and mentoring capability
  • Based in Gauteng (Johannesburg, Pretoria, or surrounding areas)
  • Prior work experience is not required

Candidates should be enthusiastic about guiding young learners, supporting innovation, and contributing to a high-impact educational environment.
