Job Overview
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is seeking a dedicated and professional Post Basic Qualified Pharmacist Assistant to join their Strubensvalley branch in Johannesburg. This role plays a key part in ensuring that patients receive safe, accurate, and high-quality pharmaceutical care, while also supporting the dispensary team in daily operations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in the provision of medicine-related services, ensuring compliance with pharmacy regulations, and delivering excellent customer service within a busy retail pharmacy environment.
This position requires a detail-oriented individual who is passionate about healthcare, committed to accuracy, and able to perform under pressure while maintaining high professional standards.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12 / Matric certificate
- Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification (Post Basic certification required)
- Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)
- Experience working with Unisolv system
- Computer literacy (MS Office Suite)
- Strong numerical and analytical skills
- Good command of English (additional language advantage)
- Willingness to work retail pharmacy hours, including weekends and public holidays
Advantageous Skills and Experience
The following will be considered an added advantage:
- Experience in retail or FMCG pharmacy environment
- Knowledge of SAP systems and e-Scripting platforms
- Understanding of complementary medicine, chronic medication, HIV/AIDS and family planning services
- Ability to communicate in a third language
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Post Basic Qualified Pharmacist Assistant will support the pharmacy team in a wide range of operational and clinical support functions, including but not limited to:
Pharmaceutical Support Services
- Assist in the sale and handling of Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines and substances
- Support the compounding, preparation, and manipulation of non-sterile medicines under pharmacist supervision
- Assist in the manufacturing and repackaging of medicines according to approved standard operating procedures
- Help ensure proper storage, distribution, and control of Schedule 1–5 medicines
Prescription and Dispensing Support
- Assist in reading, interpreting, and preparing prescriptions under pharmacist supervision
- Ensure accurate selection, labelling, and packaging of medication
- Verify patient details and capture prescription information correctly on the system
- Support pharmacists in checking prescriptions for accuracy and compliance
Patient Care and Customer Service
- Provide patients with accurate instructions on medicine usage
- Assist customers at the dispensary, self-medication area, and front shop
- Educate patients on proper medicine use and possible drug interactions
- Support follow-up communication for ongoing prescriptions and appointments
- Assist in explaining medical aid costs and procedures to patients
Stock and Administrative Duties
- Assist with stock control, ordering, and receiving of pharmaceutical products
- Monitor stock levels and report shortages or discrepancies
- Support medical aid claim processing and correction of rejected prescriptions
- Maintain accurate customer profiles and update system records
- Participate in regular stock takes and inventory control procedures
Compliance and Reporting
- Ensure all duties are performed in line with SAPC regulations and pharmacy laws
- Maintain strict adherence to Dis-Chem policies, procedures, and SOPs
- Report any medication errors, stock issues, or system discrepancies to the pharmacist or dispensary manager
- Uphold health, safety, and hygiene standards within the pharmacy

- Clean credit and criminal record required
- Valid driver’s license is advantageous
