Pay Per Annum: R2 352 642 per annum (Level 16), (all-inclusive salary package), which consists of a basic salary (70% of package, employer‘s contribution to the Government Employee Pension Fund) and a flexible portion to be structured.
A non-pensionable allowance equal to 10% of the all-inclusive nonpensionable HOD allowance.

Requirements:
- You need a high school diploma, a bachelor’s degree, and a postgraduate degree at NQF level 8 recognized by SAQA. A degree at NQF level 9 or higher is a plus.
- You must have at least 10 years of proven experience in a senior management role.
- To take this course, the chosen person must have executive management experience, strong leadership skills and significant experience in strategic and management roles at an executive level.
- They need to understand how the government works, the constitution and the Defence Secretariat’s role as described in the Constitution, Act 108 of 1996.
- The successful candidate must understand the Department’s constitutional duties, relevant government laws (Defence Act, Public Service Act, PFMA, and treasury rules) and policies that affect the Department and its relationships with international, national, and other groups.
- Knowledge of the government security sector is required.
- They should be creative, organized, have good writing skills and be skilled in project management, financial management and change management.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the Defence Department and its related groups, following all laws, rules, and guidelines.
- Advise the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans on defense policy as the main departmental expert.
- Help the Minister effectively carry out their duties as the head of defense, which includes overseeing the military.
- Assist the Minister in guiding defense strategy by doing research and creating plans to protect South Africa.
- Make sure these defense plans are put into action through strategic and day-to-day plans, projects, budgets, and aligning the organization.
- Ensure proper management of all defense resources, especially people, money, supplies, and technology.
- Oversee the defense operations, including tracking performance, evaluating results, reporting, managing risks, conducting internal audits and ensuring the department follows rules.
- Manage defense ties with important groups like the Public Service Commission, the Department of Public Service and Administration, the National Treasury, the Defence Audit Committee, and the Auditor General of South Africa.
- Offer services for defense science, technology, and purchasing that handle defense capital and technology projects.
- Legal aid for defense; services for parliament and the cabinet; grouped services; defense foreign relations; services for managing state-owned entities; public relations for the military; and access to military data.
- Also, support the National Conventions Arms Control Committee with administrative tasks.
